While the OpenCog project is ambitious compared to the routine fare of contemporary academic and industry AI research, science and technology have advanced a lot in recent decades, and it’s worth noting that a number of academic research labs have emerged recently with similar goals, including (to list just a few of our favorites):

  • Nick Cassimatis’s Human-Level Intelligence Lab at RPI
  • Stan Franklin’s LIDA project at the University of Memphis
  • Joscha Bach’s MicroPsi project at the University of Osnabruck.

However, OpenCog is significantly further along than these other projects, both in terms of possession of a detailed design and plan for getting to human-level AI, and in terms of having a codebase capable of scaling up to the necessary level.
